| "Blessed Virgin," Los Cerillos, New Mexico :: Mike Irwin :: 2013 |
In the first week of May, my brother Scott and I drove a 1993 Cadillac Seville from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Dallas, Texas. We traveled Route 66 for half of the eight-day road trip, then dropped south on arrow-straight highways to cut across scrubby desert plains. Wonderful fun. You'll see a few of my photos here, but not vacation vistas or historic monuments. Just stuff I found interesting along the way.
A beautiful courtyard next to Iglesia de San Jose in Los Cerillos, New Mexico, displays a series of rock-and-sand grottos that cup wooden, hand-carved statues. The art is a blend of Mexican and Native American handiwork, spiced with a touch of desert rat chic.
